Weather where crops grow
Explore observed weather and crop yields in the same reporting regions.
Gray indicates no eligible value. Shading follows reporting regions; country averages are not inferred from overlapping regions.
Analysis settings
Weather fits currently use crop seasons. Daily weather windows retain the planting/harvest dates; ENSO uses the complete monthly window from the same crop calendar. MEI averages the overlapping two-month periods ending in that window. Other weather windows are not fitted in this release.
What the layers mean
Weather is weighted within each region by the summed SPAM 2010 harvested area of six staples; these spatial weights are shared by crops. Temperature uses Berkeley Earth at 1° and ends in October 2024. Rainfall uses CHIRPS at 0.25° through 2025, with ERA5 where CHIRPS coverage is inadequate. Small regions may share source cells. Weather is available in subnational reporting units; national-only yield countries can have no weather layer.
Coverage, uncertainty and provenance
Only complete daily windows enter weather summaries. A multi-year 95th-percentile map averages annual crop-season percentiles. Those percentiles describe spatially averaged weather and smooth local extremes. Historical threshold-exceedance counts are different metrics and are not substituted here. Wet-day rainfall uses a 1 mm/day threshold and requires five wet days in a season.
Weather responses are regressions of annual season statistics in native units, with time and ENSO fitted jointly. Precipitation changes and trends default to percent of the region’s average for the selected statistic and period; Advanced settings also offer mm/day. Observed time series retain physical units. They are associations, not causal estimates or forecasts. Pointwise 95% intervals use 400 shared three-year block resamples. Two held-out five-year block layouts compare the ENSO model with a trend-only baseline. A selected regional result does not establish significance across the whole map. Source-to-station validation remains an upstream extension; source, grid and coverage notes accompany each unit.
